MLS Franchise Houston Dynamo announced Thursday the addition of Houston Dash- the 9th team to join the NWSL league for the 2014 season.
This monumental decision is a positive affirmation for the future of the NWSL in showcasing some of the most talented women soccer players in a stable competitive league.
With the new team come a few changes to the 2014 schedule. The season will expand from 22 matches (11 home/11 away) to 24 matches (12 home/12 away) played from April to August. The final schedule will not be revealed until the end of January.
An expansion draft will take place to add 18- 20 players to the team’s roster- the first expansion team of the league. Besides searching for players, the hunt is on for a head coach as well. The Houston Dash will compete at BVA Compass Stadium with uniforms to be unveiled at a later date.
“We’re proud and excited to welcome the Houston Dash to the NWSL as the first expansion team in league history,” NWSL executive director Cheryl Bailey told reporters. “The creation of the Dash will mean enhanced opportunities for female soccer players at the professional level as well as the chance for fans from another part of the country to watch and interact with some of the world’s most talented players. We are thrilled at being able to add an organization as strong as the Houston Dynamo as we work towards continuing to build a sustainable league.”
