WNY Flash conquered on home turf in Rochester, NY today defeating Sky Blue FC 2-0 under a cloudless night sky thanks to a thrilling Carli Lloyd brace.

The game was physically pressing from start to finish with the players having to dig deep and get creative to for opportunities. Lloyd was the hero for the Flash tonight, stunning fans with a goal in the first half goal and a final one in stoppage time.

The Flash came out charging right from the start, showering Sky Blue goalkeeper Brittany Cameron with shots, but she deftly fought them off.

Lloyd was a menace creating several chances to get on the board. Her golden moment came in the 32nd minute with an incredibly physical play that saw her diving in the box to capitalize on a cross from midfielder Katherine Reynolds. She headed the ball low past Cameron to put the Flash in the lead 1-0.

That was enough to get Sky Blue itching for a goal of their own. They took control of the field after Lloyd’s opener, turning the pressure onto Flash goalkeeper Adrianna Franch.  Forward’s Monica Ocampo and Lisa De Vanna were a blur, racing balls in left and right, but Franch exuded confidence. In the 36th minute De Vanna rushed the ball as it flew towards Franch, crouched and waiting. De Vanna outflanked Flash defense and just as she reached the run away ball, Franch locked it down fearlessly to keep the 1-0 Flash lead going into the half.

As the second half got underway, the aggression was overwhelming, with scrappy play that pushed mental and physical boundaries. Sky Blue came on strong looking for a goal. In the 65th minute De Vanna found herself facing the opposition alone, and treated the crowd to some slick footwork, pulling two cutbacks to outwit defenders before firing towards the net. But alas, It was a no-go.

Lloyd answered back just three minutes later, firing a low shot towards the net that looked like it could be a brace, but Cameron was there with an intense dive, catching the ball and defending her turf with gusto.

The minutes wound down with both sides looking for goals, and through the tumbles, yellow cards and close calls, stoppage time commenced and Lloyd steeped up and out of the out of the wild scramble on the field unassisted to send a long ball flying overhead and into the goal for a spot in the Championship.
