Santa Clara defender Julie Johnston gave the U.S. their first goal with a 38th minute header from the corner. This only stoked the competitive fire, and the Lions took possession, with Birmingham City’s defender Kerys Harrop equalizing just four minutes later.

Overtime looked imminent, but future Washington Spirit forward Stephanie Ochs shattered that notion, scoring the winner with five minutes remaining.

The U-23 girls can breathe easy and celebrate a successful trip to Spain. They defeated Norway 3-1 and Sweden  6-0 in their other two matches of the tournament.
