Portland soccer fans have a lot to be excited about, as the name and crest for the city’s Women’s Professional Soccer team was officially unveiled today as the Portland Thorns.
The crest displays a round black and green emblem accompanied by a crisp circle of thorns with a single red rose in the center- a symbol of beauty and danger. Is this something we can expect to see from the team as the fresh women’s league prepares to kick off in spring?
Alas, only time will tell. One thing is for sure though, now that Portland’s team has a name and logo, the question of who will play for them is what’s really on everyone’s mind. Superstar Abby Wambach recently became a Portland home owner, and let’s not forget Megan Rapinoe, a true blue Portland University Alumni, who has expressed great interest and excitement in the new league.
For now, fans will have to be patient, as the Thorns join the Boston Breakers, Western New York Flash, Sky Blue FC of New Jersey, and the Chicago Red Star as established teams out of the eight cities that will join the league. Meanwhile, the world still awaits the unveiling of names and logos for Washington D.C., Seattle and Kansas City.
Games are set to kick off April 2013. Keep checking back with GotSoccer to get all of the exciting updates as the Women’s Professional League unfolds.
