Ramos also named a 21 player group that traveled to Sunrise, Florida for a final tuneup before the start of the CONCACAF Championship, which opens for the United States on January 9 versus Guatemala.

Four nations will qualify to represent CONCACAF in New Zealand at the 2015 U20 Men’s World Cup. 24 countries will take place in the tournament, which runs from May 30- June 20.

This year’s CONCACAF tournament will feature two, six team groups, with the two group winners qualifying for New Zealand. The two top sides will face each other in the regional final.

The second and third place teams in each group will be reseeded based on group-stage results. In this playoff stage, the top seed will play the No. 4 seed and the second seed will face the No. 3 seed. The two winners from these respective games will also qualify for the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

The U.S. has never won this competition, although second place has been good enough to qualify for the World Cup on six occasions. Ramos was at the helm when the Young Yanks advanced to the 2013 U20 Cup in Turkey. Anything less than qualification for New Zealand would be considered a failure for the U.S.

The U.S. failed to advance from a very tough group in Turkey, sandwiching a 1-1 draw with eventual champions France around a pair of 4-1 losses, to Spain and Ghana.

Ramos seems confident in his players, telling U.S. Soccer.com that, “this is a deep group, particularly in the midfield, so we will have some tough decisions to make.”

“There will be players left out who could certainly help the team, and players off of the 35-player provisional list who have pro potential. We also have the luxury of players who can play a number of different positions. We expect that every player on the qualifying roster will play a significant role in this tournament.”
