Groups A and B are set for the 2014 Algarve Cup March 5-12, as national teams from all over the world converge in Portugal for the 21st edition of one of the top women’s soccer tournaments.

The U.S. will kick off competition March 5 against Japan and will then play Sweden March 7 and Denmark March 10. Group A includes Germany, Norway, Iceland and China PR while Group C is yet to be set in stone. The match venues and times are also still to be determined.

The top three ranked women’s teams according to FIFA Women’s World Rankings will be featured: No. 1 USA, No. 2 Germany and No. 3 Japan. Other top ranked teams include No. 6 Sweden and No. 8 Norway.  This will be the USA’s 19th Algarve Cup, and they boast nine Championship titles with three consecutive from 2003-2005.

The Algarve format will have the winners of Group A and B pitted against each other in the Championship on March 12. The second place Group A and B finishers will compete for third place while third place finishers in each group will compete for fifth place.

Group C will be competing for 7-12th place in the tournament with the winner of Group C playing the best fourth place team from Group A and B to decide 7th place.
